Twisp Pass — Friday, Jun. 5, 2020

North Cascades > Methow/Sawtooth
View up S. Fk. Twisp River

Hiked up to Twisp Pass from the Road's End campground.  Some large water bar dips on the road in.  The lower portion of trail was burned in 2018 Gilbert/Crescent Mtn fire, but is in pretty good shape.  There were perhaps 10-15 trees (or clumps of 2-5 trees) down across the trail on the way up, but only a few required much effort to get under or over.  Snow patches started around 5500', but continuous snow didn't start until around 5800'.  The trail wasn't too hard to find, with some old footprints that followed it well, only the last turn and final northward climbing traverse to the pass were at all tricky to find.  But the sloppy, collapsing, snow at lower elevations definitely slowed us down.

Spectacular flowers on the first miles of the trail through the recently burned area - Frittilaria, Maianthemums, saxifrages, Clintonia just starting to bloom, lots of asters, currants, mustards, penstemons and lots more.  Yellow Erythroniums (and slide alder!) blooming up around the snow edges.

Saw some wildlife - a couple marmots, a hawk, woodpeckers, western tanagers, unidentified drab birds, heard a grouse up near the pass.
