Little Mashel Falls - Pack Forest — Sunday, Jul. 5, 2020

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise
Forest road

Hiked to the lower falls with our 5 year old and Beagle on Sunday.  The gate was closed but finding parking in the small lot or across the highway was not an issue.  The walk up the road to the falls turn off is easy and makes for a low stress hike with a kid.  It wasn't very scenic or inspiring though, this is definitely one of those hikes where it is all about the destination and not the journey.

At the turn off (and 2.1 miles) the trail gets narrower, steeper, and more interesting.  The 5 year old managed fine with some help at the very end.  After the road we were a but surprised at how steep and rocky some of the trail got.  We skipped the middle falls for the lower falls this time.  It was a great destination that was busy but not overly so.  I'd suggest bringing some sandals or water shoes is you want to walk around.  We ventured to the far side of the river in our boots but had to be careful not to step too deep.  Our daughter loved walking through the river barefoot as it was easy enough to cross right now (with a hand from mom).
