Got out to do the actual Spencer Island trail. Have to say, was a bit disappointed.
The walk between the treatment lagoons is open but nice and has a lot of good opportunity for bird viewing.
The walk around the Southern portion of Spencer Island, however, was a bit of a mess. Trails don't seem to be getting much maintenance. Across the bridge we immediately turned to the south and then to the west on the cross-island bit of trail. These portions were, for the most part, decent enough. Once you get to the east side of the island, the trail gets a sign about unevenness (not really a huge issue. It's just not graveled, really) but the real issue is that its getting over-grown. From the turn south on the east side all the way around the southern tip of the island is passable but a bit of a mess. Grass was frequently to the knee or higher; blackberry encroached on the trail multiple times. Trail width was frequently not great as well.
On the southern portion of the loop there are a few bridges which make for the best viewing areas into the center marshlands. Much of the side vegetation is pretty high and there are times of being under tree. Did see herons and what looked like either a beaver or nutria from one on the east side. Also an osprey feeding.
For most of the southern loop, I'd say social distancing is currently impossible.
