Buck Creek Pass — Thursday, Aug. 20, 2020

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - East
Glacier Peak seen from my campsite

Was going to do two nights, doing a day hike to High Pass. This morning High Pass was shrouded in clouds and rain so came back a day early.

Road: I didn't think most of the road was that bad. The worst is between Little Giant Trailhead and the cut off to Phelps Creek. Even though I have a high clearance SUV I had to be very careful in that section.

Day 1: Arrived at the trailhead at 7:30 AM and there were plenty of parking spaces. The trail has been logged out and in great shape. I found the burn area to be quite scenic and interesting, the many purple flowers brought a sharp contrast to the burnt trees. I found the grade to be gradual and the overall hike to the pass fairly easy. Arrived at the pass at noon and was the first one there so took a great camp spot with Glacier Peak right in my face. Since I was there early I explored the area and took many pictures. The views and the peaking wildflowers were breathtaking. The one issue was water. There were many reliable water sources on the way to the pass but the last one was about a half to three quarters of a mile before the pass. Hikers coming from the other direction said it was about 1000 feet below the pass in the other direction and even further. I did have to hike back for water once.

Day 2: Started raining about 4:00 AM. Since High Pass was shrouded in clouds and rain decided to come back today. Gives me an excuse to come back to this amazing place. The hike back was uneventful and it cleared and was warm again as I hiked back. Arrived back at my vehicle at 1:30 PM. Met a lot of hikers doing the Spider Gap Loop in both directions. Ate lots of ripe blueberries along the trail.
