Only few people visiting Penrose Point State Park actually get to see Penrose Point the park is named after. This location is accessible only at low tide by following the beach north from the access point at Delano Bay. The cliff at Penrose Point is too high and unsafe to allow trail access to this point from land. On the hike back we observed an unusual feature on the exposed wood of a burl on a fallen bigleaf maple trunk after the bark had peeled off. Maples and other trees sometimes develop spherical burls on their trunks.
