Trip Report

Heather - Maple Pass Loop — Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2020

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Huckleberries in peak form

Here is my "fall color advisory" for the Maple Pass loop as of September 30. This has to be one of the prettiest hikes in Washington State.

The fall colors including red huckleberry vine maple and mountain ash are at full peak right now. However it's still a bit early for the Golden larch. As seen in my pictures they are a lovely greenish yellow right now but to get the full golden color I would wait to do this hike until one week from now, about October 7th or after that.

Happy hiking!

A bit early for larches

Beautiful! Thank you. How is the road on the way up? Any particularly narrow sections?

Hi. The parking lot is on State highway 20 at Rainy pass. So nice and wide with good shoulder. But note that on Wednesday the lot was full at 10:30 am. Lots of people parked on the highway. You do need US forest pass or interagency pass.
