Trip Report

Heather - Maple Pass Loop — Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Halfway up the climb going clockwise

Disclaimer: This was hiked yesterday and before today's (10/23/20) snow event. Trail and weather conditions may be much different now. Be sure you check the forecast and road conditions before you go out and also bring proper gear.

It was a great day for a hike and we started just after 10am. We decided to go clockwise with only two other people in front of us breaking the trail from the recent new snowfall. With microspikes and poles, we started up the trail and the first 1.3 miles was simple besides being a step climb. The next mile we started to break into more open views which is where snow started to get deeper but was still no problem and a nice steady climb. The last half mile to Maple Pass was much deeper snow, but we had no problems still and only sunk to our knees a handful of times.

We started to pass people who were going counter-clockwise and most of them reported people going that direction and then stopping at the top and going back the same way. The final 100 yards up to the pass was the steepest by far, but honestly, unless you are new to hiking, its not as hard as people make it out to be. Amazing views all around while chatting with others and had a snack.

We continued on clockwise and down the pass where snow was still deep, but only sunk a few times. We passed a few people doing the whole loop without poles and just microspikes, which also gives you an idea that it is not as bad as many make it out to be. We cruised around the last half and when we were only two miles from the trailhead, the trail was packed down and easy all the way thanks to the amount of people who went counter-clockwise and back out the same way.

If you plan on doing the whole loop, I suggest going clockwise and getting the steep part out of the way early. You will also have the sun to your back as you loop around which makes for nice views and photos.

Remember, there is a winter storm warning in effect Friday (10/23/20) for a bunch of new snow.  At this very moment, it appears Saturday and Sunday are looking sunny and well below freezing. Check conditions before you go. First people out after the storm will have to kick in the trail for sure again, but everyone else after that should be treated to blue skies and great views all around. Enjoy!

Final 100 yards up to the pass.
