Kachess Ridge / Kachess Beacon — Friday, Dec. 4, 2020

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass

Shout out to KWH for his report a few days ago that inspired me to do this hike. I think it's an under rated hike and would do it again with friends at the next opportunity. It's short as far as time required but there's enough exertion, variety, and views to make it worth while. From the small parking lot you'll walk a short distance to a Y and take the left trail. It gets steep right out of the gate and keeps you focused in a good way as it meanders through a nicely spaced forest that doesn't feel constricting. You enjoy cross-ravine mountain views on your right, then switch back to the left where in short order you emerge onto the ridge that takes you the beacon. No monotony, nice and open, and there's lots of great vistas.I made a snow bench on the open slope under the tower and enjoyed a nice half hour snack while I basked in the bluebird goodness of sunshine and views.
I began the hike at 1:00 pm, arrived on the ridge at 2:22, the beacon at 2:45, and headed back down at 3:15. Arriving at my car right at 4:00 with light to spare. You'll want good layers (I was down to a t-shirt at times), spikes and a headlamp for late starts like mine (recommend). Descending the steep sections avoid twisting your ankle on frozen post holes of past hikers and don't miss the glissading spot!
