Trip Report

Artist Point Snowshoe — Friday, Jan. 8, 2021

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
Congested parking around Picture Lake

The following is an excerpt from a press release regarding parking along the Mt. Baker Highway and includes parking information for those planning on snowshoeing to Artist Point.

Due to increased use and public safety concerns, the Washington
State Department of Transportation will be implementing strict parking policies near the
end of Mt. Baker Highway (State Route
542).

Roadside parking around the Picture Lake
loop and by the upper Mt. Baker Ski Area
Lodge is prohibited from 7pm to 7am and
 is reserved for WSDOT
snow operations and vehicles. Washington
State Patrol may ticket and/or tow vehicles
parked over the fog line, in pullouts not
designated for long term parking, and
vehicles parked during nighttime hours.

In addition to the above regarding the roadside parking around the loop and by the lodge, the Bagley Lakes Trailhead will not open until 9am on the days the ski area's upper lodge is open.  This is so the parking lot attendants can maximize the number of vehicles in the parking lot and allow for safe distancing due to Covid-19. Please plan accordingly, visit on a weekday if you can, and have a backup plan.

Can you please provide a link to the source? I can't find the press release on the WSDOT or ski area website.

So... those of us who are responsible and get there really early to avoid crowds and watch the sunrise at Artist Point get to be punished? I don’t see anything online about this either. Absolutely ridiculous, if it’s true.

Thank you for the link lefrou18. Notice that the press release says the upper lot by bagley is open 7am to 7pm. This is why it's important to seek the source for news posted on social media. It says nothing of the bagley TH being closed until 9am.

The press release does not include the information about Bagley Lakes Trailhead. It is specific to the roadside parking. I added that in at the end of the post so no one would be surprised and should have clarified that it was additional information. Unfortunately not everyone who arrives early parks nicely, so the ski area was given permission to close that lot until 9am.

Hi, thank you so much for posting this. I am a bit confused- if we do want to go to Artist Point on a busy weekend, when should we arrive and where should we plan to park? My interpretation is that no one can park before 7am, but the trailhead parking won't open until 9am? What's the best approach here - willing to start *very* early to get a spot!

Hi. You can arrive at 7, you will be directed to park roadside somewhere around the Picture Lake Loop or by the ski area's upper lodge until the parking lot opens at 9.
