Hex Mountain Snowshoe — Monday, Feb. 8, 2021

Snoqualmie Region > Salmon La Sac/Teanaway

We snowshoed up Hex Mountain today.  It's been a few years and things have changed.  For one, the Nature Conservancy now owns the property.  Also the area was impacted by the Jolly mountain fire in 2017.  We parked in the plowed space across from the fire station on the other side of Newport Creek, about 0.25 miles from the trail head.  It seems to be the only spot plowed. Once on the road go straight up past a yellow gate where there's a Nature Conservancy sign.  Although it had snowed since anyone had travelled there, the ruts from snowshoes and skis were pretty clear.  Once on the Hex Mountain trail it's pretty clear, just stay with the ridge, avoiding the cornices edge on the east (right side going up).  A great day.

Thanks for the report. I may be going up tomorrow afternoon. Was that tree still across the trail about 1 mile in (on the road)? Last time I was there it had all the branches on it, which caught my snowshoes and caused me to fall flat on my face. Ha, ha.

Yes the tree is still there. But maybe some of the branches have been broken and maybe the level of the snow is higher.

Do you think we could get by with spike and poles on Wednesday?

There was about 6-8 inches of new snow on the road part of the trip and the upper portion had deeper drifts. Only 4 people on snowshoes and 2 skiers Monday so not much packing down.
