Dog Mountain — Wednesday, Mar. 10, 2021

Southwest Washington > Columbia River Gorge - WA

Arrived at TH about 11:45am. Full sun. I like to hike this trail early each year to learn what kind of shape my legs/lungs are in. It's a good test.

About two hours to the top for this old man. Made coffee, had half sandwich and enjoyed the views, mostly sunny all the way. Decided on the Augsberger trail for the loop back to the car. I think it adds about .9 miles, but it's more gradual. Encountered some small patches of snow on this trail near the top, but nothing like micro-spikes needed to negotiate. Mostly walk thru's maybe twenty to thirty feet long, intermittently near the start, after that it's a mostly dry trail back to the car.

By the way, you get a good view at the top of Dog Mtn. of Mt. Defiance with it's "spit in your eye" demeanor across the river. It's waiting, but I'll tackle this one in mid summer.
