Racehorse Landslide Fossil Fields — Saturday, Mar. 13, 2021

North Cascades
Landslide, from the top of the ridge

Followed the instructions from this geology blog post to go look for fossils above Racehorse Creek.

Access. The N Fk Rd had a generous amount of potholes. The fork of the road that climbs up to the trailhead (missing from Google Maps!) on the other hand was in good condition.

Conditions. The decommissioned road section of the trail had ditches to climb in/out every hundred feet or so, but no other obstacles. No issues with the narrow trail through the forest. The final, steep section to the top of the ridge had some ropes installed, but the dirt was just moist enough to provide good footing.

Wildlife. Plentiful fossilized leafs, even at the bottom of the steep section. Almost every rock you picked up had some traces of a fossil, but for best results you'd need to bring tools for splitting rock.

Crowds. Encountered two parties.

Interesting. One of those that I file away in the memory banks as something cool to check out, then never go there. I've always had in mind to check out the palm leaf fossil at Canyon Lake Community Forest. (I guess there's a nice stand of low elevation old growth there, too.)

Thanks, I'm adding Canyon Lake Community Forest to my list (for next year; according to https://www.whatcomcounty.us/3581/Canyon-Lake-Community-Forest, access is closed through the end of this year).

Thank you for sharing that. Those leaf fossils are really cool. Didn't know we had something like that in western WA.
