Trip Report

Oyster Dome — Wednesday, Jun. 2, 2021

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Panorama from the top
  • Arrived on a Wednesday afternoon at 12:30pm and snagged the last parking spot from someone leaving. The gravel road to the parking lot is rough and bumpy in spots, but generally no trouble, even for a RWD sedan.
  • Spoiler alert: the view from the parking lot at Samish Overlook is pretty much the same as the view from the top of the Oyster Dome hike (albeit not quite as expansive), but it is a nice view of the water, Olympics, and other points west.
  • The trail is shaded the entire way up to the top and well-signed. There was one tree down across the trail, but it's no trouble. We took it slow (with lots of breaks) for a slower member of the party, clocking 1hr 35min to the top (2.35mi, 998ft elevation gain) and 1hr 10min back down (251ft elevation gain).
  • There were a half-dozen people at the top on a Wednesday afternoon, with plenty of room for folks to relax and grab a bite to eat.
  • All in all, a nice hike without too much elevation gain, but not one of our favorites.
You can see the Olympics and shellfishing operations (we assume) from the top
Pretty much the same view from the parking lot
