Mine Road Trail — Thursday, Jun. 24, 2021

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Salmonberries! Lots of salmonberries!

This is a 2 mile road turned into a trail that goes to a mine.  It is an easy trail in most places broad and flat and maybe 200 ft gain max.  It is true that there are overgrown sections but the overgrowth is salmonberries.  Lots and lots of salmonberries! The moss covered tree trunks with sunshine dappling through the canopy is simply lovely.

The trailhead is just the end of a short potholed road with parking along the sides and no outhouse.  To the right is a gated dirt road to who knows where and to the left are the boulders before a bridge.  Crossing the bridge and going about a mile there is a sign for the Neiderprum trail.  The book says that's a 3000 ft tortuous vertical ascent to a sloped meadow.  Skip it.

At the end of the Mine Road Trail is a mine.  It is inviting except for the pools of water at its entrance.  I really wanted to go in and I had my headlamp but my friend counseled common sense and we went down to the river instead.  There used to be a way to go upstream to a really good view of the mountains but it is totally overgrown now and impassable.
