Big Four Ice Caves — Saturday, Sep. 4, 2021

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

The bridge is out and won't be repaired until sometime in 2022 (according to the sign). Don't let that stop you. We don't need no stinkin bridge. When I visited, I rebuilt the stone bridge across the river. It still looks like it is in one piece based on the latest trip report. If you get there and it isn't there, then please spend some time putting it back together for everyone else's enjoyment. The water was not that cold and I could stand in it all day and building is fun! I have included a video of the crossing so you can check it out. After you cross that bridge, you still have to cross another small stream with a rock bridge, then you have to clammer your way up to the bridge trail. Somehow dogs and little kids are doing it, I saw lots along the way. Some people still prefer to wade their way across the river which is knee deep. I would recommend crossing just before the rock bridge as it is fairly flat and calm. You can also cross upstream of the bridge where there is another rock bridge. There is is a thick wire that you can hoist yourself up to the trail, but that wouldn't be recommended for kids or dogs.
