The day was absolutely stunning with temps in the high 60s, low 70s (I think -- no cell service). The larches are really just beginning to turn (we saw better larch foliage on the Blue Lake trail the day prior) but the foliage from other plants/trees made this a worthy hike. We did the side trail to Lake Ann -- a little less crowded. We are slightly older hikers so were very happy to have had my poles for the decent from Maple Pass.
Note to self: maybe it isn't a GREAT idea to hike this gorgeous hike on the first beautiful Saturday in autumn. Due to partner's 30 year old boots giving up the ghost the day before (on the trail to Blue Lake -- sweet!), we did not get started until close to 10:30 AM. Go as early as you can. Cars were parked 1/2 mile back from the Rainy Pass picnic area in both directions and on both sides of highway 20. As someone else noted in another trip report, it was a conga line heading up counterclockwise. We had no choice but to hike this day but I say wait a few weeks, go mid-week on a cloudy day! A good friend did this hike on Thursday Sept 23rd and also encountered a lot of folks. I am glad people are exploring the outdoors!
