Trip Report

Ashland Lakes, Boardman Lake — Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Who hiked the trail:
Myself, a mom, and two kids (ages 7 and 10).

Parking:
- Arrived at 9:40am; only cars in the lot
- Left around 1:30pm: only cars in the lot

Visitors:
We were the only ones there (probably because of the rainy forecast and the unpleasant road).

Trail condition:
The trail trail begins in very good condition. Lots of boardwalks; can be slippery in areas. Some sections are fairly muddy, but overall, the trail to Upper Ashland lake is very good.

*Note: I added in Boardman Lake to the trip report because of the road conditions; we did not hike Boardman Lake, but they share part of the same road.

Road condition:
As many others have noted, this road is only good for high clearance vehicles. I lead trips outdoors for work, so I have driven on my fair share of forest service roads. I will say, at least with the water filling the potholes, this is by far one of the worst I've driven. With it being the rainy season now, the potholes are filled with water, so you have no idea how deep they are and what is in them. If you zoom into the picture I posted, you can see car parts slightly sticking out of the right side of the pothole. I recommend, if you don't like the potholes at the beginning of the forest service road, you turn around. It's 5 miles of that (some worse than those first potholes). I made it up in my Subaru Outback, but was definitely hesitant at times. Please be careful!!
