Trip Report

Mount Ellinor — Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
NDF-24 is in a much worse condition than NF-2419 with some sizable potholes. But any car should be able to make it to upper trailhead if you go slow.
Started from upper lot at 6:50am and reached a great viewpoint before sunrise. Intermittent snow after the summer and winter route fork. Then gradually became persistent. Lots of packed snow above 4600 feet.
Avalanche had happened apparently on the exposed slope right before reaching the ridge. I felt safe with spikes and an ice axe.
I took the summer route up and went down the winter route. Most people still took the summer route apparently as I did not run into anyone along the winter route. The winter route seemed safer now.
