Trip Report

Lower Gray Wolf River — Saturday, Mar. 19, 2022

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
I didn't take the Cat Creek Loop, assuming it would be very muddy.

Always a Pleasure
I really enjoy this trail, especially in late winter or spring. It's a nice distance for an early season hike with some up and down to begin conditioning if you haven't gotten out much in the winter. Nothing strenuous.

Road Conditions: Suitable for all vehicles. Once the pavement ends, the road is hard-packed dirt with a thin layer mud. There are spots where the road widens broadly and the edges get a deeper with mud (6"). And yes, there are the potholes and washboard sections as usual. There is a spot where some large fallen rocks. It's right on the inside edge and easy to spot.

Trail: When I arrived at 11AM, there was only one car at the trailhead. Just before I started on the trail, another car showed up. I hiked just short of the trail's termination for a 6.48 mile round trip. WTA's page says 800 feet gain, but my Garmin indicated 1,296 feet. I didn't see another soul until I got to the campsites shortly before the trail's end. The trail was in great condition. This trail always has muddy spots regardless of season. So, wear proper shoes. On the way back, I saw increasing numbers of hikers the closer I got to the trailhead. When emerging, I counted a dozen cars. Parking is limited. So, cars line the side of the road.

Thanks for the trail update. We’re headed out here next Tuesday to take advantage of the 60 degree weather.
