Trip Report

Picnic Point — Tuesday, Apr. 19, 2022

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area
Great Blue Heron With Prize.

Now that we are well into spring, the minus low tides are happening during daylight hours. I went down to Picnic Point to see what might emerge in the early afternoon as the tide as going out. There were quite a few people parked in the lot but most of them must have gone north toward Shipwreck Point. I went south and only saw a few others. I spotted a bald eagle on top of one of the pilings that have bird houses on them. The eagle was tearing something apart with it's beak and claws. I walked through the tide pools and met a crab scurrying around and when I approached for a portrait it gave me what I can only assume as the Dungeness Finger with it's claw. About a half mile south I was able to spend about fifteen minutes watching a great blue heron fishing. It seemed quite successful as it was catching a bout two a minute.

The weather was coming from the south as usual and I was able to watch some clouds form over the Kitsap Peninsula and drop rain to the west.

Storm Over Kitsap Peninsula.
Getting the Dungeness Finger.
Great Blue Heron in it's Element.

Beautiful photos as always! The last one is my favorite and "getting the crab finger" is cleverly labeled!

I can't blame the crab for its behavior since I was invading its environment and I admire its spunk.
