Hurricane Hill — Saturday, May. 21, 2022

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
That’s a mighty big cornice about to drop!

I didn’t want kidzwonthike to go home without awesome views, so we headed over to Hurricane Hill. It was a lot busier than when I went up a couple weeks ago (for good reason: the weather was nice). The whole way was well packed along the boot path, so we booted the whole way. There were people in sneakers and trail runners, but everyone who got up seemed to have hiking boots/trail runners. Snowshoes were pretty unnecessary today as long as we stuck to the bootpath—thanks snowshoers and skiers!

The bootpath goes over snow, except the very last ridge/sections near the bench. I tried to avoid following the social trail up the ridge and instead followed the snow covered road, but it was tricky. There isn’t a ton of snow left on the ridge though (2” tops), so I don’t know if I’d walk the ridge soon (hopefully the road will be melted out). Views were excellent along the way and at the end (so much nicer when you can see everything!!). We chatted up a XC skier, and ran into lots of people with dogs on the way down—only one group for sure with their dog on trail (!!!!). Dogs aren’t allowed in the park for their safety and to protect the animals/ecosystem.

The road’s under there… somewhere…
