Hummocks Loop, Hummocks Trail — Saturday, Jun. 1, 2024

South Cascades > Mount St. Helens
Big view from around the turnoff to the Boundary Trail.

Hiked from Hummocks trailhead to just shy of Loowit Viewpoint, then circled the rest of the Hummocks Loop on our way back to the car.

Plenty of other people sharing the trail, but not overly crowded. Portapotties in the parking lot were well kept. Lots of parking available.

Trail is in good shape throughout. Starting forested in and out of the Hummocks, it becomes pretty much all exposed as you make your way up the ridge on the Boundary Trail. A couple points up there where it gets a little rocky/slanted to the side, but otherwise pretty gentle.

Views were incredible! The Hummocks itself--especially if you fully take in the interpretive signs explaining the geology--is a sight to see, and the volcano is of course at its most dramatic from this vantage point. The open Toutle Valley to the west and its North Fork below offer a broad panorama from Johnston Ridge.

Not much in the way of fauna. Lupine, paintbrush, and other wildflowers are coming to the fore.

Recommend a stop at the "Birth of a Lake" (or some such) interpretive trail on your way in or out. Fascinating geology to learn about at Coldwater Lake!

On the Hummocks Loop.
Looking back down the Toutle Valley.
Near Loowit Viewpoint.
