Trip Report

Kautz Creek to Indian Henry's Hunting Ground — Tuesday, Sep. 24, 2024

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise
Iconic view of the mountain and patrol cabin.

Took advantage of what might be the last warm day of the season by hiking the Kautz Creek trail to the fantastic meadows at Indian Henry's. As always, this is a lung-burning climb. The total vertical was 3,600 feet, with most of that coming on about three miles of trail. The payoff makes it worthwhile. The views of Tahoma are what I consider the most spectacular in the park. The trail is in great shape (other than being so steep). There is one trickle of water at the 3-mile mark, but other than that it is dry. Carry all the water you are going to need. Had a nice lunch on the porch of the patrol cabin with a backcountry ranger and a Wonderland Trail through hiker. Saw a total of six hikers all day. For this trail that's a crowd.

Final traverse over the shoulder of Mount Ararat
Dinnerplate sized mushrooms were everywhere
Tahoma in your face as you come over Ararat
