Trip Report

Heather - Maple Pass Loop — Monday, Oct. 7, 2024

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

A family member and I decided to go camping to see the larches for our first time ever. We were hoping to do this at a time when the weather was pretty decent, at least some of the larches had changed to their beautiful yellow/golden color, and it wasn’t a weekend day. I was personally very torn about coming to this area as it gets so much hiker traffic, and I do have other larch hikes on a list. But with the weather and timing, we decided to try this place out at least once while we can.

We did Blue Lake last night on our way into the area and the Maple Pass Loop this morning to mid-afternoon. Blue Lake was amazing and should definitely be done if you’re short on time. Maple Pass today was on another level! Along with the yellow larches, there was a lot of red, orange, and some purple too. So worth taking a work day off.

This is a repeat…We truly feel so lucky to be able to experience something like this and appreciate everyone who has worked to make this available. We also appreciate everyone who treats the area and fellow visitors with care and respect.

We went clockwise and enjoyed the views but it’s honestly beautiful either way. It’s hard work keeping dogs on leash but very doable. However, unfortunately, you’ll likely encounter off leash dogs. Definitely bring lots of water for the pup as it gets warm and is dry. Some snow, but mostly melted. Trail in pass was muddy and slippery. Poles aren’t a must but would be very helpful in these areas.
