This was my 8th trip into the Core and am back down now recovering. I went up Aasgard and back down as I like to avoid the Snow Lakes slog. I'll write more later but am convinced this trail needs little advertising, having witnessed the conga line up the Pass and the cars parked side by side all the way past the 8 Mile trailhead...
That being said, going against the flow down the hill is not only the quickest way to a pumpkin latte and heated seats, it also allows you to give encouragement to the people heading up. It was the first time into the Core for many and I really enjoy doing this.
Gear:
Osprey Levity pack
Zpacks Duplex tent
MH 32 degree bag
Thermarest nvx xtherm pad
GFX100s camera and 18mm, 28-55 lenses
Oben ctt1000l tripod
MH ghost whisperer down jacket and pants
Merrell waterproof slip on shoes
stack of almond butter and honey sandwiches
electrolyte tabs
sawyer water filter
etc
If you plan on making a habit of this, and you are in your late 50s like me, lighter stuff is better. Example: thinking of how many times you raise your feet to the next rock, lighter footwear is better. This led me to my merrels over my usual Salomon gtx. I avoid poles; I lost a tooth to one and they screw up my cadence. Your results may vary. I also drink straight from fast moving water. Again, your preference. My pack was about 26 lbs.
i recommend geartrade and backpackinglite to avoid paying full retail.

Amazing night shot! Chance of a lifetime. I've been hiking here for several years now but haven't gotten enough certainty about when it's safe or not to drink the raw water, but sure would like to. Got any tips for how to decide?

Thanks! I only drink from fast moving water, so its a judgement call.
