Big Four Ice Caves — Monday, Nov. 18, 2024

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
The caves under a fresh blanket of snow.

What a difference a few days can make. After reading the last trip report for this trail, we decided to head for the caves. I checked "Intermittent snow" above, because it was the best option.

On the drive in, the road was a snow & slush mix miles and had to cut a blowdown off of the road about 2 miles before the trailhead. Numerous branches and obstacles to go around.
Good job to the road maintenance crew for plowing and clearing obstacles. Road was pretty clear on the drive out.

The trail itself was snow covered from start to finish. Just a couple of inches at the beginning and 8-10 inches at the caves. Foggy and lightly snowing most of the way.

Left the snow gear at home, so we had to trudge our way up the trail in hiking boots. Just made it a little more fun.

On the boardwalk.
Even with the snow, the trail was pretty easy to follow.
Hike on!
