Just thought I break the Washington mold and send in a cool experience out of the hills around Usury Mt to the immediate east of Mesa, Az. See photos for a very close encounter with the serpent of note in these environs. I have seen several of these rock climbing out at Vantage and near 11worth, but never up so close and never expressing its displeasure at our transit of its royalty realm. We were clearly warned by the signature loud rattling coming from antipode of the business end. Note: these cell phone pics have been expanded a few times to show detail. Even I, in my obtuseness, would not really get this close.

Knowing my luck I'd jump back from the rattlesnake, fall on the cactus, and recoil forward only to land on the rattlesnake anyway. I think I'll stay here in flood and avalanche country where it's safe.

Hilarious comment DK1998. I laughed so hard I almost fell on a Gila monster, many of which I have seen in the Tucson area in past years. I’ve been in SoCal and Az and Utah (Zion) for just over a month now. Returning to Roslyn sometime soon and going to leave again in Feb or before if I got severe SAD from being in the NW again. 😬
