Iverson Spit is one of our go-to quick nearby hike options in the off-season. It is pretty any time of year, but especially nice on a sunny winter day. The portion of the trail along the dike is in full sun most of the day, while the forest loop gets shaded by early afternoon, and the shade was quite chilly when we were there at 3 p.m.
The dike is a great spot to bird watch; our toddler loved seeing the ducks, heron and songbirds. A few areas of the trail were a bit muddy, though there have been a few more boardwalk sections added in the forest loop since last year, helping keep more of the trail out of the mud. The hobbit trail is often muddy through much of the winter, so wear appropriate footwear if you want to venture through there.
Pro Tip: Iverson Spit is one of the "community sites" included in the annual Northwest Glass Quest, which runs this year from February 14 through 23. For those unfamiliar, Stanwood and Camano businesses hide plastic "clueballs" in local parks over the course of the week that can be turned in for hand-blown glass replica floats.
