North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
Hikers crossing one of the patches of snow with Shuksan behind them.

Okay, wow. This is a quintessentially north North Cascades hike to an awe-inspiring 360 degree view of endless snowy mountain peaks in two countries that leaves you breathless (both the view and the climb). The steep dirt road up is fine for just about any car if you take it slow, and parking is all parallel along the road, enough room for several dozen cars I'm sure. The trail starts right off with climb the first mile, then levels off a bit until you hit the last half mile or so. Wildflowers are starting to bloom near the top - they'll be getting even more amazing in the next few weeks - and snow is melting fast. There were a few patches to cross and I did pull out my microspikes for one just so I wouldn't fall on my butt and slide. I also found my poles to be helpful, however most other people were crossing them just fine in nothing but their boots or runners. The last 1/4 mile to the false summit is a slog up a very steep hill but so so worth it! There was a small group gathered at the top, and many of us didn't bother going to the real summit - it's another 1/4 or so going down a steep hill then back up to a scramble to a small tip, according to someone who did go there. I couldn't imagine it being that much better to be worth it, and it was fun to watch those who did from the false summit, but that's just me. Water can be had at a couple creek crossings as well as from snow if you're desperate. There were folks hiking in with overnight packs, and some tents scattered amongst the tarns below the butte (see photo). I'm sure it would be amazing to be on the butte near sunset, which you could do if you were camping there. All in all just an incredibly beautiful perfect hike that requires hard work and a good sweat to get there. Enjoy!

View of real summit from false summit - if you zoom in you can see someone on the trail and the trail along the ridgeline. Tall peaks behind it are along the Canadian/US border
View of some tarns, Keep Kool Butte, and Mt. Baker
View of tarns below Butte where folks are camping - zoom in the see tents and trail to Tomyhoi Peak

Hello CoraGG, You are correct that the sunset is nice from the top, but camping is only allowed down by the tarns and beyond, not along the main trail. If you want to watch the sunset from up there you need to hike back down to your campsite by the tarns. Thank you US Forest Service

Yes, I meant if you were camping down by the tarns and hiked up to the summit in the evening with a headlamp - thanks for clarifying that for everyone since my report wasn't clear. It certainly would not be appropriate (or allowed) to camp at the summit.
