Trip Report

Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm — Saturday, Jul. 12, 2025

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
wildflowers in bloom prior to Cascade Pass

Road to trailhead in good shape.  Couple rough spots on road but otherwise easily navigable for most vehicles. Arrived at trailhead at 630 AM.  Parking lot full and some people starting to park on the roadside.

There are enough biting bugs to be annoyance at beginning of trail and did not let up till Sahale Arm. Would recommend bug spray.

Trail up cascade pass in great shape with some muddy spots.  Flowers are starting to come out (glacier lilies, phlox). There are two short snow fields right before cascade pass which were straight forward to cross.

Short sections of snow fields on Sahale Arm which were easy to cross.  Trail is quite muddy and slippery in sections with some running water.  Would recommend waterproof shoes and poles. Lots of goats (including kids) and marmots. No snow on the boulder section to Sahale Glacier.  Plenty of water on the trail.

We continued onto Sahale Mountain but this requires rappelling, scrambling with class 3/4 exposure, crampons, ice axe.

Views eastward from Cascade Pass
Sahale mountain with doubtful lake
