This popular trail is great for younger folks, but I would not recommend it for anyone over 50 years of age, unless they are blessed with good balance and are in great hiking shape. Treking poles are a must for us older folks (I am 77 years old with balance issues).
The trail isn't too bad until reaching the small waterfall, except for an annoying creek crossing that was damaged during a flood several years ago. After that, the trail to the lake is mainly a jumble of angular boulders from ancient rockslides and blasting for trail construction years ago. There are many switchbacks and stairs to help the climb to the lake. But footing is often treacherous, with trip hazards from rocks and roots. While the lake is beautiful, I will never attempt it again.
