Coldwater Peak — Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025

South Cascades > Mount St. Helens
Top of Coldwater Peak

Did this one from Hummocks Trailhead. From there it's a .9 mile road walk (past the gate) on SR 504 to the South Coldwater Lake trailhead. Arrived at 9:30am. Coolish morning about 60 degrees, overcast, no wind. From there the trail begins fairly easy, meandering through a forest canopy breaking into exposure after a mile or so. Pass the old wrecked logging equipment. Mostly open trail to the intersection at Ridge Camp. There are a few places after Ridge Camp that are in need of some maintenance but easily passible. Tons and tons of huckleberries super sweet and largish for this type of berry. Also some unripe Salmonberries, and some very nice tasting wild strawberries. All of these are at arms reach from trail, ate a bunch. Ridge Camp is 3.4 miles from the South Coldwater TH or 4.3 miles from Hummocks TH. The trail begins climbing again. You pass a 'saddle' then climbing continually to the intersection with the Boundary Trail at 5.7 miles (or 6.6). Then make a left (northeasterly) there and continue for about 3/4 mile. St. Helens is grand, looking off to your right. Nearly to the end of the lake, watch for the trail leading up to the top of the Peak. (left turn). There are 13 switchbacks in the remaining climb to the top. Reward yourself with a beverage and lunch among the equipment and tower at the top. Great views of the crater and Mt. Adams. Pretty overcast on the day I went so I couldn't see other peaks, though. AllTrails has the distance incorrect, me thinks. I logged a nick under 17 miles round trip. Worthwhile hike, I think. Takes about 8 and one half hours. (includes a 45 minute lunch)

By the way, I don't think a pass is required at the Hummocks TH.

Enjoy!
