Melakwa Lake — Friday, Sep. 19, 2025

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass

First of all, the trail is now open after all the work this year. Didn't see any signs warning of closures for the present or future! Just a dozen or so cars at the huge parking lot at 10 AM on a Friday morning.

The trail is in good condition, especially after all the work that has been going on for the last 2 years. Previously rocky sections were much easier to walk across, thanks to the skillful rearrangement of the rocks. It was good to see some of the rock steps I had worked on as part of WTA work parties, still in place and now naturally blending with the landscape!

Not many people at the lake. I saw one group that snagged the best camping spot, and another set of campers going up as I came down.

Blueberries were plentiful but seemed to be past their prime. Most of them just exploded at the slightest touch. The rest were not very good, except for a single bush that I happened to find that still had tasty berries. Maybe if you're nice to me I'll share the GPS co-ordinates! :-) Fall colors are just starting.

If you're like me and don't do well in the sun, keep in mind that there is a long section (starting at the creek crossing next to the big snag and ending just below Hemlock Pass) that is completely exposed. Some exposure around the area near Keekwulee Falls too, but not too bad. And of course the trail is pretty rocky, so allow for that when hurrying down.
