Trip Report

Sauk Mountain — Saturday, Sep. 27, 2025

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

⚠️ SAUK MOUNTAIN — DANGER

This is the most dangerous hiking trail in the PNW.

Three hikers have now died falling from the switchbacks:
• July 11, 2017: 69-year-old woman
• July 18, 2018: 71-year-old woman
• Sept 27, 2025: 63-year-old man

PLEASE BE EXTRA CAREFUL.
• Stay on the built trail. Do NOT cut switchbacks or tolerate anyone else doing so.
• Shortcutting has severely eroded the maintained trail at the top of the shortcuts and can contribute to a fatal fall.
• Keep children close; leash dogs; yield carefully before/after narrow trail sections.

When we arrived at the trailhead, two hikers arriving back reported that they had heard the yelling from a serious accident above them, called 911 and confirmed that 911 was on the phone with the people at the scene, and pointed out to us where we could see the people at the scene on the exposed switchbacks.

We gathered a few things and hiked quickly up to the scene. Bystanders were performing CPR on a 63 year old man who had fallen off one the switchbacks and tumbled hundreds of feet to just above another part of the trail.

After paramedics arrived and attempted resuscitation with their equipment, and after getting the 3 youth in his group headed down to their van with one of the adults from the group, EMS declared it to have been a fatality.

We walked the other adult member of the group, and the bystander who had performed the CPR chest compressions the entire time we were there, back to the trailhead. We then hiked back up to attempt to find the patient’s pack, but did not find one visible from anywhere on the trail above or below the scene.

I saw this on the news last night and it's very unfortunate. My condolences to the man's family. Having said that, I've hiked this trail before and while there are risks, it's really no more treacherous than other similar trails. I don't know the circumstances of the man's fall but that sort of thing can easily happen anywhere. For example look at how many people have died falling off Rattlesnake Ledge or Mount Si's Haystack. The wilderness isn't like a city park and we all need to be careful out there.

Yes, there are other dangerous trails out there, but no non-technical maintained hiking trails in WA are this deadly by number of fatal falls. There was 1 death at Rattlesnake in the last decade (16yo slipped on an icy rock taking a photo) and a total of 4 in the last 2 decades (same # of deaths as Sauk over that time). Mt. Si’s Haystack (which is a scramble, not a hiking trail) has had one fatality in the last 20 years. Rattlesnake gets about 30x as many visitors as Sauk.

I suspect the widespread awareness of the 2010s deaths at Rattlesnake have helped avoid further deaths there since 2018. I hope that raising awareness of the risks at Sauk will similarly help avoid future deaths there.

Scottt - Thank you for the information on trail safety. It’s helpful in the right moment. However, your detailed reporting of the scene and first responders is grossly insensitive to the family and friends at this time. Stop with the play by play of this tragic event and others for that matter. My sincere condolences to the family whom we pray for.

My apologies that you found my account insensitive. My goal was to help everyone understand just how serious a fall is on a slope that steep, and to reassure everyone that everything possible was done for the patient and those there who knew him.

My sincerest hope is that no one ever has to go through this again.

Please let me know if there are any specific edits you (or especially anyone involved or related) would like me to make to the post.

Oh crap, my husband and I hiked this with our 4month old and mountain dog yesterday. We saw the group headed up as we were headed back down. Stopped to chat with them, a bit and answer a couple questions about the trail. It looked like they were taking it slow and pretty careful, it’s horrible hearing the leader didn’t make it.

I was out of town the last 2 weeks and just now read about the fatality on this trail. Condolences to the man's family and the hiking friends that were with him. I have been hiking this trail for years and it has always been a favorite, so it is very sad to hear a hiker lost his life out enjoying a beautiful day in the mtns.
