Tieton River Nature Trail — Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025

Central Washington > Yakima
Late season rattlesnake

Somewhat eventful ~7 mile loop on the Tieton Nature Trail and up along the irrigation canal today. Started from the westernmost footbridge and headed west along the river to reach the irrigation canal, then east along the canal, eventually dropping back down to the main trail at the suspension bridge and back to the car.

A warm but mostly cloudy day with the last vestiges of fall color fading along the canyon. I encountered several deer that appeared to be stuck in the canal. Not sure if there is a ramp somewhere that would allow them to exit. Just before dropping back down to the river, I heard a faint buzzing noise coming from just off the trail. I stopped and looked around for what I assumed was a wasp or some other insect when I spotted a small rattlesnake with its head raised about two feet in front of me. Not something typically on my radar for a hike in mid-November! While it's been warm, I was wearing a fleece jacket at the time so really quite bizarre. I grew up in Arizona and can't ever remember seeing an active rattlesnake in November before.

Did you notify anyone about the deer? If not I will call or notify WDFW. There is no way out of there-looks like dumb young buck rutting activity chasing a little doe. Boys will be boys-of all species.

Interesting about the rattler-I've been buzzed a million times it seems like but never this time of year, even though if was exceptionally warm yesterday.

I notified the canal folks but guessing they won't see it until Monday. Hopefully they prefer to get them out now vs. remove carcasses in the spring...

I contacted WDFW Region 3 and got a reply early this morning. They're on it, up there looking for them. Hope they can get them out. Back when I was in middle school, so that's over 50 plus years ago, we camped along the Tieton and walked up to the canal and saw a deer that was in it, poor thing was panicked as you might imagine-there was no way it could get out on it's own. Thanks for making the call.

Thanks! Yes, hope they were successful. I imagine it happens somewhat frequently...easy to get in, hard to get out.
