Had a great trip up to "First Mate Peak" (Peak 5650) next door to Captain Point via the forest roads. Due to increasingly more snow on the road, I parked on FS6710 about 0.5mi from the left turn that has a bridge over Martin Creek. I started with microspikes and poles right from the car and switched to snowshoes at 4200ft. The amount of snow on the road varies from a couple inches to a couple feet. Views of Fernow from the road were spectacular and make this a worthwhile snowshoe trip. There's also views of many large peaks towards the south in the Alpine lakes wilderness.
I broke trail up the road to 5400ft, then went off trail heading north to the summit of the peak right before Captain Point, which has an elevation of 5650, which I'll call First Mate Peak. I found a not too steep path to the summit with partial views on the way up. On the summit there's some trees but good views too. Glacier Peak and neighbor Captain Point are visible from the summit.
With the short days, I decided to return the way I came instead of continuing to Captain Point. The trip was about 8.9mi and 2700ft elev gain roundtrip. Overall a beautiful snowshoe route with views for days on this sunny last day of November.
