Frog Mountain — Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West
Evergreen Mountain in the background

I slept in this morning, but took advantage of the good weather and went and hiked Frog Mountain. Given more planning I probably could've come up with something more challenging and interesting, but still a good day.

Index-Galena road was snow-free, but a little slick with frost. From where the pavement ends to Jack Pass was basically clear (although this could obviously change quickly with precipitation) and then there was just a thin compact layer of snow and ice that could be easily navigated by a sedan.

Given that the snow line seems to be around 4000ft on the western foothills I wasn't expecting to hit snow on the lower portion of the trail, but snow started below the parking lot (2600ft). I'd forgotten to grab my microspikes so I hoped for the best. The first mile was a bit icy where things had thawed and refrozen, but above that it turned into compacted snow and I didn't have any traction issues with just the worn lugs on my trail runners. The trail was well worn and easy to follow all the way to the true summit. The summit had maybe 12 inches of snow?

This will probably become a snowshoe hike, but for now it's doable with decent traction shoes (ideally microspikes).
