Lyre Conservation Area — Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast

Hiked to the Lyre Conservation Area from the Lyre River Campground.

I was camping at the Lyre River Campground (DNR, free with Discover Pass, first come/first served) and there was a connecting trail to the beach so I decided to check it out. The actual TH is on Reynold Rd. just off Hwy 112 (Straight of Juan de Fuca Hwy), about twenty miles past Port Angeles. There are a couple parking areas that can fit a dozen cars, and the "trail" is a two mile unused gravel road to the beach. Very flat the whole way, with a slight downhill near the beach. There is no porta-potty at the TH, but strangely enough there is one near the beach just before a bridge over a little creek. Just past the bridge is a trail on the right which makes a lollipop loop around a small meadow, so you can go either way.

The beach itself is a typical rocky beach looking out over the Straight to Vancouver Island. It's also a popular spot for surfers although there were none both days I was there. The Lyre River empties out here creating a little spit that the gulls like to hang out at. Nice bench to watch the marine traffic, including a Coast Guard cutter and some fighter jets from Whidbey.

This is not a destination hike, but worth the while if you are in the area, esp. if you are staying at the campground. It's obviously well-loved by the locals, so please be respectful and pack your trash (I saw none!).
