Chose this for my New Year’s Day hike due to weather; it is always a beautiful hike even when the sun isn’t shining. It did not disappoint today, but here are some notes:
1. The road is open with a small detour and aside from a few areas where debris or construction has it down to a single lane, it is in relatively good shape. The road was icy as I drove in early this morning, so be careful.
2. There are A LOT of blowdowns and debris from the recent storms across the trail from about a mile in all the way to the junction for Dutch Miller Gap. I expect more trees will fall as the soil is still super saturated. All the current blowdowns are passable. The ones you can’t climb over or under have boot paths starting to show around them. Still, be careful of new tree falls and try to stay on trail as much as possible.
3. I didn’t go down the river trail spur, assuming it was going to be especially boggy. I would give that some time to dry out or be prepared for a lot of deep mud.
Other than that, this was a typical cloudy-day hike of Middle Fork … wonderful!

The junction for Dutch Miller Gap? Do you mean the Dingford Creek bridge about 6 miles in where you have to cross to go to D M G? You could also go to D M G via crossing Burntboot creek just before Goldmeyr....
