Mica Peak to Liberty Lake Traverse — Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026

Eastern Washington > Spokane Area/Coeur d'Alene

A few friends I decided to start 2026 with another trip across the Mica Peak to Liberty Lake Traverse. This year was by far the easiest snow conditions we have had in years, maybe ever. We carried snowshoes on our backpacks the whole way but never stopped and put them on.  The deepest snow we encountered was maybe 10-12 inches of consolidated snow.

Major kudos to the new switchbacks on the Saltese Ridge section of this traverse. The back and forth of the new trail was much easier on the cardiovascular system than the old "motorcycle" built trail that it replaced. If you go take plenty of water and snacks.  At just over 13 miles from start to finish there was a need to refuel and hydrate along the route.  If you're up for it this would be a great year to try to accomplish 26.2 miles by going over and back this route in a day!  Just kidding, unless you're gonna do it.

Liberty Lake in view, enjoying the gentle decent of the Edith Hanson ByPass!
