Trip Report

Deception Pass State Park - Lottie Point Loop — Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
View across Bowman Bay from the trail to Lottie Point and Lottie Beach.

The Bowman Bay parking lot was almost full at 10:30 am on this sunny but cold Sunday. The bathroom is open and stocked.

We followed the path toward Lottie Bay. The beach paralleling the path is an alternative to avoid the frosty and slippery woody debris. Once in the woods, the trail was easy going. Most people head down to the beach at Lottie Bay. We took the steep path up to Lottie Point.

Once the trail flattens out initially, you'll find many unsigned trails and it's easy to get turned around. The one going straight that follows the shoreline (rather than heading up again) is the most direct path, but there are a few steps with big exposure. Keep working your way towards the point until you can glimpse the moss-covered outcrop of Lottie Point, which is a lovely place to picnic and enjoy the scenery.

The water becomes more interesting when the current is 5 knots or higher. You might even see kayakers playing in Canoe Pass.

Looking into Canoe Pass. Ebbing around 3.5 knots.
