May Creek Trail, Waterline Trail — Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026

Issaquah Alps
US Mail Van on the trail
This is a very residential hike. There is no trailhead. We just parked in the neighborhood right by the start of the hike.

The May Creek Trail follows the historic route of the Seattle-Walla Walla Railroad, which transported coal from the mines once operating in present-day Cougar Mountain Park.
The trail is well drained and there are no muddy areas. There are no bugs this time of year and there is no snow at this elevation. You will find an old abandoned rustic US Mail Van on this trail which is a great photo op!

We started at the May Creek trailhead in the Windtree neighborhoood, then had to walk some on the coal creek parkway and then made a left on SE May Creek Park Drive. On our right, we came across a Buddhist Temple, Phước An Đạo Tràng. We took the waterline trail(right next to the temple) all the way to Boren Lake.Spent a few minutes at the lake and came back to the buddist temple to follow the May Creek trail back to our cars. My Garmin recorded 5.6 miles RT.

This hike is a very nice patch of woods in the middle of a Newcastle residential area. It's not too far from the main roads. You are frequently in someone's backyard and so you feel that you have not left civilization. Sometimes you hear the cars driving on the nearby roads. When you start going downhill towards the creek, that's when you feel you are actually in the woods. There are nice benches for you to sit there and admire the beauty around. Great spot to have lunch or for the kids to play in the water!
Great hike if you are short on time and dont want to drive far to be in the woods!

Fun Fact : May Creek is the third largest tributary of Lake Washington

Beautiful day on this trail
