Arrive at the trailhead at 8:30. First car in the lot. The road in is in great condition, paved the entire way. The only bathrooms open at the trailhead are the ones at the visitor center, the others by the picnic area are closed for the winter.
This is a trail where you want to take your time. It's short but it's meant to be passed through slowly and not rushed.
The trail itself is in good shape, no blowdowns and the mud isn't even that bad. A few big puddles but that's it.
This is a very special hike. I thought I had seen lush moss, I had no idea how wrong I was. There are tendrils of moss over 3ft in length hanging from these trees. Every tree is it's own forest in miniature. The nurse log was mindblowing, I have never seen a mature nurse log tree where the roots of the trees show where the previous tree fell and decayed.
We did the loop twice to take more photos with the changing light. Really great to have it to ourselves on a day with such gorgeous weather.
When we returned to the lot around 10 many more people were arriving (maybe 20 cars in total) still a very quiet morning, but if you start early there will be no one.
Amazing trail well worth the time to get here, I have never seen anywhere else like it.
