Frailey Mountain — Sunday, Mar. 1, 2026

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
View from the landing just below the true summit

Frailey Mountainis a road walk that has some pretty nice views. Aferrenberg and I hiked past the lookout site, and went all the way over to the true summit. There were a few patches of snow along the way, but maybe only 2" in spots. We didn't bring microspikes, nor did we need them. The lookout site is only 3.3 miles(6.6 miles RT) and 1600ft gain and has some nice views along the way.

After a short stay on the lookout site, we headed off to the true summit. The road drops about 200 ft before a series of rolling ups and downs, before heading up a short switchback to a nice landing just below the summit which has a very nice view over to the lookout site with its radio tower visible sticking out of the trees with White Chuck, Glacier, Whitehorse, and Three Fingers looming above. From here we bushwacked to the true summit, which was underwhelming as it was in some dense trees. Would not recommend wearing shorts for this section, as I was wearing them and got a few scratches! oops! We headed back to this landing and soaked up the views while having lunch. It's about 2 miles(4 miles RT) to this nice landing.

After our lunch we then had the long road walk back. Very nice road walk on this beautiful day as we soaked up the sunshine, and enjoyed the views. 11.4 miles RT with 2532 ft gain

I saw this one in an old hiking book published in 1990, always wondered about it, so thanks for posting. I might get the hiking grandmas up there, doesn't look beyond our old knee capabilities!

It’s a nice road walk with a few nice views along the way. Plus road walks are always nice for chit chatting!
