Trail run this rainy morning at Stimpson Nature Preserve - I can't believe this place is just a 15-minute drive from Bellingham! The big trees, the ferns, the moss, the water, the mud. SO MUCH LIFE, you can't help but absorb some much-needed hope while on the trail. If you have visitors from out of town, and they ask what it's like to live in the PNW, take them on this trail. If it's raining, even better, it's probably more legit that way.
This trail is great for everyone, both loops are friendly for all ages. There are some short steep sections, especially on the back side of the big loop, but nothing too bad. With all the recent rain, plenty of muddy spots, but they are all navigable. Just expect soaked trail runners, or wear good boots and plow right through. I did slip a few times in the mud, so you might want poles for balance on rainy days.
No dogs allowed, and no passes needed in the parking lot. There are bathrooms in the lot (I didn't check their condition), good signage throughout the trails. Only one other car when I got there, I didn't see a single person on the trail.
Grateful to be in the woods this morning, and grateful that trails like this are so close to home and accessible year-round.
4.8 miles total, 500 feet elevation, just under an hour on the trail.
