Trip Report
Elwha River and Lillian River — Friday, Apr. 10, 2009

Hiked from the Whiskey Bend trailhead to Canyon Camp, about 8 miles in. Weather was fine, despite the rainy forecast, and the trail is in good shape. A few blowdowns near Mary's Falls camp and Canyon, but nothing major. No snow at all--this is a fantastic early-season day hike or overnight. I also explored Humes Ranch and Michael's Cabin, a worthwhile side trip with plenty of fascinating history.
Saw lots of deer, but no elk--a volunteer ranger said he'd heard they were on the other side of the valley. Lots of birds were out, too--winter wrens, an Oregon junco (I think), dippers, and a pair of mergansers floating down the river. Saw a few violets blooming not far from the trailhead, but not much else in bloom yet.
Even though this trail is low elevation, it's a roller coaster, with plenty of ups and downs above the river canyon. You'll get a good workout on this hike.
Canyon Camp is a lovely spot. If you're staying here, be sure to check out the camps beyond the bear wire. I moved camp after discovering a spot overlooking the river and an elegant little waterfall--all tucked amid huge cedars and hemlocks.
This is a great early season hike, especially on a weekday when there's hardly anyone on trail.
