Trip Report

Umtanum Ridge Crest — Thursday, Apr. 22, 2010

Central Washington > Yakima
Crocidium multicaule; (common name: Gold Star)
The hills are green and alive with spring. Wildflowers are just starting and even some wildlife. Trail is in good shape, weather was perfect, 70oF with a breeze, and I only saw three people (on the way down). Saw several species of phlox in mass flowerings, gold star, sagebrush violet, foothill death-camas, lots of upland larkspur and ballhead waterleaf, trumpet lungwort, prairie star, sicklepod rockcress, oregon grape, and fields of blue mustard. Also saw four deer, song birds aplenty, painted lady butterflies, and a rubber boa slowly crossing the trail. Doesn't get much better than to eat lunch, then lie down in soft grass, with the sun and a nice breeze to take a short nap, all by yourself. well worth the trip.
