Trip Report

Coyote Wall - Moab/Maui Loop — Sunday, Apr. 14, 2013

Southwest Washington > Columbia River Gorge - WA
This was a beautiful view hike, perfect for a sunny day, or a warmer overcast day. There is no canopy cover on this hike, so keep this in mind on windy or rainy days. I hiked this trail with my fiancé and two kids. Despite the common images and words about "cliffs," I found this hike to be relatively safe for children. There is only one part to this trail that I would use caution, when catching a glimpse of the coyote wall itself. This is an optional view though, and you can hike as close to the edge of this cliff as you prefer. At this point, I would suggest you keep children far back. We unknowingly started this trail off on the wrong foot. While hiking down the old road, we turned left at the first trailhead we saw. Needless to say we hiked this loop in the reverse. Neither ends of this loop are "well marked," and in fact there are no signs at any of the crossings of trails, of which there are several. The only sign at each trailhead is a sign delegating who should have the right-of-way on the trail. Despite these little bumps, we had a great day. The spring flowers are blooming at this time. It was a nice breezy trail, easy for the kids, good for dogs. Meadows and meadows of poison oak around the waterfalls, so know what it looks like.
