Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
WTA work party at the trailhead. Lots of smiling faces. :-) Photo by HalfCenturyHiker
We were hoping for sunshine but the only way we found it were from the smiling faces of a large WTA work party (see photo) at the trailhead. Many thanks goes out to those work parties who improve the trails we hike. They make our experiences on the trail much more enjoyable. Thanks WTA. But on with the hike... This is a wonderful hike and a petty good work out going over Big Hump! The the trail between Little Hump and Big Hump is one of the best sections in the Olympics, I think. Relatively little elevation gain between them, the trail wonders through big conifers with intermittent stands of maples, vineleaf maples with a few rhododendrons sprinkled in. A delightful section of trail! I hoped to photograph sections of trail going up and over Big Hump because I remember being to late to catch the blossoms three years ago. Unfortunately most of them were burnt pretty badly in the fire. Shame on the person who did not extinguish their campfire properly! We had lunch next to the river at the camp 5.3 miles from the trailhead, a great destination for a day hike. Despite the rain we had a great day hike with friend and family.

Trail going through burnt out section of trail. The foliage along the trail was a bright green enhanced by the black and gray of the brunt trees and dirt. Photo by HalfCenturyHiker
