We had just a little time to take a short walk before an engagement in Everett, and accessed the Big Gulch trail system via the 92nd Street Park (there are two other trail access points.) This system has 2-3 miles of scenic trails, but we wanted a shorter walk.
After entering the forest from the trailhead, we took a lovely and beautifully built set of stairs that went down, down, down to the bottom of the gulch. Soon after that, we crossed a picturesque bridge across a small stream. There's a pretty amazing tree there, roots spanning the stream where it has washed out the soil beneath. When given a choice, we opted to go left, and up a hill to the trail access point behind the Staybridge Suites (the 3rd access is at the Mukilteo Library). We returned to the park via SR525, and the walk was about 1 1/4 miles.
This is really quite a lovely walk. Decending to the depths of the gulch makes you feel as though you are far away, even though the nearby highway can be heard. There are some lovely evergreen trees in here, and the light filters down through some beautiful big-leaf maples. The soft whistling of the kinglets can be heard in the trees throughout. It's a peaceful way to take a short break in the heart of the town of Mukilteo.
